Plantar Fasciitis – Cause and Cure

Plantar Fasciitis - Cause and Cure

Plantar Fasciitis Cause

A search on the web will turn up a host of information on plantar fasciitis, but there is a basic sameness throughout, because there are just two fundamental causes for the problem –

Heel Pain

  1. Too much pressure on the heel bone, or calcaneus; and
  2. Tension, or tightness, in the plantar fascia, with a related tightness in the calf muscles.

Pressure on the heel bone is caused by a combination of:

  1. weight pressing down from above, i.e. the person habitually carries more body weight on the heel than on the rest of the foot;
  2. pressure from below, i.e. caused by the hardness of the surfaces we move on every day – cement, tiles, paving, tar….

Tightness of the fascia may go unnoticed for years, until some unusually strenuous activity – something a little more taxing than usual – actually causes microscopic tears in the fascia, usually where it hinges to the heel bone, and inflammation sets in. This inflammation of the fascia is called fasciitis and may spread around the heel bone or even up the length of the fascia, towards the ball of the foot.

Plantar Fasciitis Cure

Foot Bliss

A cure, in this respect, means successful, permanent restoration of normal, pain free function in the foot.

Many therapies and treatments offer pain relief, either by means of anti-inflammatory medication, cushioning, massage or exercise. The relief is temporary and dependent on consistent or repeated application. The truly discouraging thing about fasciitis is that it often returns at a later stage. This is because increased activity may cause the fascia to tear again, unless elasticity and mobility are diligently maintained. So, in fact we want a foot that can cope in every situation, with any kind of activity, regardless of what the demand may be… climbing stairs, playing volley ball on the beach, or even hiking 100 km. A fit foot can do these things!!

But few people keep up indefinitely with intense exercise programs and suddenly find themselves back at square one with a new bout of fasciitis. Keeping body fitness optimal by working out in a gym, requires dedicated, consistent effort and the same goes for foot exercise.
